For over 20 years, Calvary’s Open Door Project has given each of us the opportunity to partner with ways God is at work locally and around the world. This annual year-end focus is about participating with God in bringing the nations and the Grand Rapids area into His family. We hope you will, once more, join us in this effort.
In less than two years, the face of the world has changed.
Millions have fled the tyranny of war, famine, and heartache - moving from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia into Europe and beyond. Before our eyes, the largest movement of people since World War II took shape. Nations and their leaders, led by everything from compassion to fear, struggled with how to respond. Migrants faced the very real threat of death on the journey and the dehumanizing reality of being treated as a problem in each new location.
In our own country and community, we see increased numbers of refugees and immigrants arriving each month. What should be our response as Christ’s church in this place? How can we welcome them to their new home and ease their transition into American life? How can we share with them the hope that we have in Christ?
We believe, as those who profess Jesus as Lord of our lives, that it is our responsibility to welcome refugees and immigrants. For as Jesus tells his followers in Matthew 25:40, “...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” When we feed the hungry, when we give drink to the thirsty, when we welcome the stranger... we are welcoming Jesus.
Will you join with Calvary’s Open Door project to extend the love of Jesus and welcome strangers? Our target this year is to raise $240,000. Return your Open Door project giving envelope by mail or in the offering plate any Sunday. You can give to the Open Door project all year long, simply by marking a regular giving envelope with “ODP.” You may also give online.
