When I am afraid I put my trust in You!
This morning I sit in the presence of brothers and sisters in Central Asia as we are encourage to radical commitment as followers of Jesus. Radical, in that we make a drastic change and departure from traditional and cultural norms; commitment, in that we unwaveringly devote ourselves to a pursuit at the cost of other activities. To be radically committed to Jesus is to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to love our neighbor as ourself - to love others above our own interests.
Three individuals stand up before us to share they will be going to the border of Turkey to care for refugees from Syria. Asking that we pray for courage, they express their fear knowing they enter into danger from persecution. Whether single or married, we are challenged to be willing to go were God calls us. These followers rush in to a place where we would likely never send a short-term team for fear of security and safety issues...
Father, convict us in our lack of faith, commitment and willingness to follow you in radical commitment - to give up our lives in order to follow you as your disciples. Place in our hearts a new willingness to stretch out our hands in faith and go where we do not want to go. Cause us to have renewed strength and trust in You that leads to obedience despite the cost. Lead us downs paths of righteousness for Your name sake. And uphold our brothers and sisters as they courageously follow You.
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose Word I praise, in God I trust, I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?"
