Camp Serve 2019: Day One

Hi, our names are Abigail, Onaka,

Today we had our first day of Camp Serve. Soon after we were dropped off, we were separated into four groups. Our group went to Pastor Jim’s office with the Worship Team. We also helped pick songs for Sunday and vote on the bulletin for the new series. The 2nd group cooked lunch for us. The 3rd group went with the tech team and are creating a video about Camp Serve. The 4th group helped clean the church. After the wonderful lunch the cooking group made for us, we had Judi Warner, the director of the Special Needs program, present a presentation on the Special Needs Program. It was a wonderful presentation. Afterwards, we split up into three groups similar to the ones we were in before. Our group went to David’s House, a place where people with special needs can go live and have the help they need whilst feeling more independent at the same time. Afterwards, we proceeded to Mel Trotter where we helped by taking people’s trays and entertain them with small talk and songs. When a mother with 5 young kids showed up, we were happy to assist her by helping them get food and chatting/keeping an eye on them while the mother got her food. The 2nd group went to a retirement home and hung out with the residents before proceeding to Degage, where they served up some root beer floats and playing bingo. The third group went to a man’s farm to help him rearrange ( Getting older ain’t easy. Ya’ never know when your back might give… ). This sums up our first day at Camp Serve. ( I would have written a formal essay, except KATIE SAID LIGHTS OUT IS RIGHT NOW! How “Convenient”)

Parents,

Can I just say your kids are fantastic? I was so impressed with our group today and the ways that they stepped up and served and worked as a team. As you heard from Onaka and Abigail, we had lots of different activities going on throughout the day. Students did everything from cooking us lunch, to cleaning the sanctuary, to counting money from the offering on Sunday, to serving dinner at Mel Trotter. During debrief tonight we had students reflect on the different activities they did during the day and specifically think about ones that they felt came natural to them and what ones were more challenging or stretching. Our hope is that your child will find at least one area of serving that gives them life so that they can continue serving in that area in our church.

After concluding the day with a giant game of flashlight tag down in room 108, I think they are all finally sleeping….or at least quiet!

Please continue to pray for the different activities tomorrow and our time of devotions in the morning.

Katie
