HSM Hawaii 2024: Day 6

Our last day on site was a recreation day to rest, debrief, and enjoy Maui as a team before going home. In the morning, our team split into two groups. One went into town to do some souvenir shopping while the other group did the 4+ mile Waihee trail near camp. It was awesome to see a different piece of God’s creation than what we are used to, and it was cool to watch students continue to lean into conversations with one another. After lunch, the team went to the more touristy side of the island, to Kaanapali. We closed the evening with a time of debriefing on the beach and sharing the ways we have seen God work this week. As we watched the sunset, we had a beautiful time of worship, praising God for who He is and what He has done. After awhile, some people had started…

HSM Hawaii 2024:Day 3

Group 1- update by Kirsten Today our group served at a resource center. We spend the day distributing food and clothing to community members impacted directly or indirectly by the fires. We had some great connection conversations with long term volunteers and got to see their care for the community, and it was really cool to watch students connect with and engage everyone who came through the doors to show them God’s love and care in getting physical needs met. Group 2- update by Kaylynn Our team went to work with Malama Kula, a non profit group that has been working to cleanup from the fires in Kula and bring restoration to the land and community. They took time to share the “why” of what we would be doing that day- showing us the damage from the fires, as well as explaining the benefits of certain trees and plants and…

HSM Hawaii 2024: Day 2

Day 2. We all started out with a breakfast crafted by the praying pelicans staff! Delicious pancakes and sausages were distributed to all of the students. Next, we were graciously invited to a local church with many welcome hands. The sermon was very well received and we got to meet with a lot of local people from Waipuma Chapel, one of the church partners of Praying Pelican Ministry. Then, we headed to the fire department that the first responders in the wild fires worked and we prayed over the people of Lahiana and acknowledged their work. After that we arrived at a memorial that housed a walk that showed us everyone who lost their lives in the fires. We each individually took time to pray over the memorial and process the depth of the fires. Next, we made our way to an orientation at Auntie Netties, a place designed to…
