2025, HSM Detroit:

Detroit 2025: Day 1 Arrival

The day started at 11:30 when everyone met together at Calvary for lunch and prayer. We headed out at 12:45 for the two and a half hour drive to Detroit. We passed the time in the vans by talking, listening to music, and playing games (like poker). We arrived around 3:20, explored the colorful hostel and unpacked all the luggage and supplies. We divided into five teams of four for cooking, and each team got a colored apron. We made the unanimous decision to wear the aprons while shopping for groceries. Running around the grocery store wearing colored aprons and holding Monopoly money felt like being on an exciting game show (several people were mistaken for store employees and were asked where certain ingredients were located). We then drove home, unloaded the absurd amount of groceries, and the yellow team made Italian food for dinner, including spaghetti, chicken alfredo, and breadsticks. We were joined by Micah, Megan, their kids, and a friend for dinner. After they left, Ayantu led devotions, talking about seeking God’s presence over his promise, then everyone spent fifteen minutes alone doing just that. The next thirty minutes were spent cleaning up dinner and hanging out. We then played baseball, had therapy sessions with David, discussed Reddit situations with Nhung, played games, and sang various songs until the 11:30 curfew. (Tomorrow will be an early morning to leave for church.) So far, the first day in Detroit has been a blast!
