2024, Hawaii, Short Term Missions:

HSM Hawaii 2024:Day 3

Group 1- update by Kirsten

Today our group served at a resource center. We spend the day distributing food and clothing to community members impacted directly or indirectly by the fires. We had some great connection conversations with long term volunteers and got to see their care for the community, and it was really cool to watch students connect with and engage everyone who came through the doors to show them God’s love and care in getting physical needs met.

Group 2- update by Kaylynn

Our team went to work with Malama Kula, a non profit group that has been working to cleanup from the fires in Kula and bring restoration to the land and community. They took time to share the “why” of what we would be doing that day- showing us the damage from the fires, as well as explaining the benefits of certain trees and plants and the harm of invasive species. Our group spent the morning weeding invasive species that are hydrophobic and can cause future fires and mudslides in the wet season. We also planted new trees that will help with the healing of the land where the old trees had burned down. During our team devotions in the evening, the students on this team shared that they were thankful God brought unity in the group. This team was made up of students who wouldn’t normally interact, but today they all served together and took time to share about their lives and stories. It was a beautiful answer to prayer for unity on our team!

Group 3 – update by Alex

Our group served at Aunti Netty’s by completing the following tasks:

helping Built pallet shelf’s
Plywood paneling and flooring in a community space – attached to the pallets.

Reorganizing of containers
High low stuff (forklift) ran by Travis

All the kids worked so hard to get the job done by the end of the day and truly set the standard for hardworking. To finish off the day there was an epic dance battle with Aunti Netty.
