Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

With this message, we begin the portion of Matthew’s gospel known as the Sermon on the Mount. We learn about what it means to be poor in spirit, seeing that God blesses those who say “I can’t or won’t on my own. I am needy.” rather than those who say “I can and I will on my own,” and try to bless themselves. We are also reminded that the Father places us in situations where we come face-to-face with our own inabilities, so that he has the opportunity to prove himself faithful to us.
