The first part of this passage is directed at elders of the church, encouraging them to be examples to the flock. The remainder of the passage broadens to include all leaders, calling them to be vigilant for those who in their flock who are hurting and wounded. Peter also calls shepherds to seek out strays and bring back those who have wandered away. Shepherds also find that their basic tasks include protecting their sheep from dangers and serving as a guide. The sermon concludes with four attitudes that correspond with the basic tasks of a shepherd, highlighting what a blessing leadership can be in difficult times.
