One of the charges that often gets levied against Christians is that of hypocrisy. We often think of hypocrisy as saying one thing and doing another but the image that the Bible gives of hypocrisy is external appearance without internal substance. Pursuing external appearance is attractive because that is what the world sees. External appearance makes us look good and gives us esteem from the world. This passage tells us that what we should really pursue is internal substance. Internal substance demonstrates who we really are and internal substance is what pleases God.
