Super VBS!

Day 1:
Superhero of the Day: Joseph

We were excited to get the week started, though Monday, we had the smallest number of kids. We introduced the kids to 5 songs and dances that we practiced each day, including our VBS theme song, “Jesus You’re My Superhero”.

Freda shared the story of Joseph with the kids, some of who have not heard stories from the Bible before. She talked about his coat of many colors, his brothers betrayal, and his time in Egypt. Through the week, we had the kids create pieces of a superhero costume. To help the kids remember Joseph’s story, we had them create a cape of many colors.

Day 2:
Superhero of the Day: David

The kids learned the story from Anderson about the bravery of David and how he defeated Goliath. Anderson (in fully protective armor) then invited each kid to try to throw a beanbag at head to resemble David taking down Goliath.

For the craft, we helped the kids make their own slingshots to shoot puffballs. They traced our tallest team member and colored him in how they imagined Goliath looked. This time, with their slingshot they practiced defeating the giant. They continued to get practice using their slingshots as we set up different activities stations for the game.

Day 3:
Superhero of the Day: Mary

After a few days practicing the songs, the kids were finally starting to get the dance moves down. They then learned about Mary’s journey to Bethlehem and how God chose her to bring His son into this world.

This craft may have been the kids favorite all week. Just as Mary road a “trusty steed” into Bentham, we kids decorated their own trusty steed. Once everyone had their reigns attached, they took turns riding through an obstacle course.

Day 4:
Superhero of the Day: Jesus

The kids enjoyed learning about Jesus from Emmanuel. He shared some of the miracles Jesus performed and how he died on the cross for each one of us. Just as Jesus saves and protects us, so too does a shield during battle. The kids all decorated paper-plate shields using paint, markers, and stickers.

For the game we played “Big Shepherd”. Everyone was shown 3 moves to do and they had to try not to pick the same one as the Big Shepherd. This game was a crowd favorite and the kids loved taking turns being the Big Shepherd.

Day 5:
Superhero of the Day: Paul

To celebrate the end of the week, we asked everyone to dress up. Some kids come in full costumes, other had their face painted to match their hero name, and the rest were excited to wear the costume pieces that they made throughout the week. Energy was at an all time high as the kids knew all the moves and words to the song by this point.

Andersen shared with the kids the story of Paul and how he was blinded. He had each kid put on a blind fold to understand how Paul may have felt. The kids made the final piece of their costume, the masks, and we all took a big superhero group photo. We play a rock, paper, scissors tournament that ended in a Spider-Man meme moment.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to help with Pangrati Church’s first VBS. It was hard to say goodbye to the kids and the Pangrati team, but we are thankful we got to build those relationships. We pray God continues to use them and grow their church.
